If you haven’t heard by now, there has been drama between Neil Young and Spotify over Joe Rogan’s comments regarding vaccines where Young gave Spotify an ultimatum, either get rid of Joe Rogan, or Neil Young walks. Musician Joni Mitchell also Joined in on the drama removing her music as well. It first appeared that this was a PR stunt or typical political posturing, but then some other correlating news made this more interesting. It turns out that company ran by a former Pfizer CEO just bought the rights to half of Neil Young’s music in January of 2021.
An article by cnbc dated January 6th says that the legendary Rocker sold half of songs to the Hipgnosis Songs Fund. The Hipgnosis Songs fund is an investment vehicle founded by Merck Mercuriadis. This deal gives Hipgnosis the rights to the worldwide copyright and income interests from 1,180 songs composed by Young
Just the past October, an investment firm called Blackstone bought an undisclosed but large portion of Hipgnosis. Blackstone’s senior advisor is former Pfizer CEO Jeffrey B. Kindler, who just joined Blackstone back in October according to a press release by Blackstone.com.
Tech giants are now picking sides with offering free trial promotions on Neil Young’s music with Amazon, Sirius XM and Apple music according to Business Insider.
This political posturing is starting to seem more like a thinly veiled marketing campaign. We know that people within the establishment and their cronies do not like letting a good crisis or controversy go to waste. It wouldn’t shock me if the controversy was pre constructed to make them and their constituent’s money, in this case, just after a huge purchase of publishing rights to Neil Young’s music and also to push the vaccine agenda effectively killing two birds with one stone.
Joe Rogan has since responded on his instagram to the controversy with a story of him working as a security guard at a Neil Young event, even stating how much of a fan he was of Young’s music. Here is the video he posted below.
